We are rethinking our processes in terms of sustainability

"What we do today determines what the world will look like tomorrow."

(Marie v. Ebner-Eschenbach)

The greatest treasure of our beautiful federal state - apart from the people who live here - is its unique nature. It is the basis for the special holiday feeling that you experience every time you stay with us at the Baltic Sea. Preserving this treasure is our greatest task. As a large hotel surrounded by the most beautiful nature and right by the sea, we believe that sustainability is more than just a choice - it is a responsibility we have towards our planet and future generations. To this end, we are constantly evolving and trying to conserve resources wherever possible and involve our team and our guests so that future generations can also spend their holidays on the Mecklenburg coast.

While we minimise our impact on the environment and encourage eco-friendly behaviour, we know that every small step counts - and we are proud of the changes we have achieved so far.

Our path to sustainability is an exciting journey characterised by learning, growth and a commitment to improvement. We dare to be bold by also taking big steps to reorganise our daily and strategic processes.

However, the courage to change also involves reflecting and admitting when some steps are out of proportion to what is on offer. We are therefore delighted that the lively dialogue with you, our guests, about the numerous initiatives at our hotel is taking place very actively and would be delighted if you would also give us your feedback on how you experience these measures during your stay with us. We want the balance between the needs and wishes of our guests and sustainability to be in the best possible harmony. For you, this means the highest possible level of comfort on the one hand - and for us, it means that we will continue to pursue the path to sustainability with determination.

An excerpt: with creative, alternative options, we offer our guests an attractive and well-cared-for stay, while still giving them the choice to do without daily room cleaning. We pack high-quality spa bags for you and are happy if we can do without disposable bath slippers in the process.

Read about our sustainability initiatives below.

Thank you for accompanying and supporting us so wonderfully on our path to greater sustainability. Thank you also for all the critical voices that always give us the opportunity to reflect and change our perspective.

Let's develop the luxury of the hotel industry gently and sustainably together.

Our sustainability initiatives

Own bathing shoes instead of disposable bathing slippers

Did you know that we use more than 500 pairs of bathing slippers in a normal month with average occupancy? They are usually disposed of after a single use and thus produce a large amount of waste.

In your room you will find a sustainable jute bag including a bathrobe and sauna towels, which you can use free of charge for your SPA visit for the duration of your stay. We do not issue disposable bath slippers - in the interests of sustainability - and thus reduce a lot of waste.

So please feel free to bring your own slippers . Alternatively, you can purchase sustainable flip-flops from us at the SPA reception.

We pull the plug on energy-guzzling minibars

Did you know that a minibar in a room consumes almost four times as much electricity as a conventional household refrigerator? Yet it only has a quarter of the volume. This is anything but efficient and a convenience at the expense of the environment. We no longer consider this to be in keeping with the times.

Alternatively, we offer you a 24-hour selection of drinks from our lobby snack bar.

Please contact us if you have an acute need for cooling medication and the like.

We use green electricity!

Since 1 January 2021, our entire electricity requirements have been covered by 100% renewable energy thanks to our electricity supply from watergreen !

No CO2 emissions are generated during the production of the electricity.

watergreen is energy that is generated entirely from renewable energy sources. The plants that produce the electricity are located in Europe and are connected to the electricity grid.

watergreen supports responsible and future-oriented action - easy to implement, efficient to use and convenient watergreen - 100 per cent environmentally friendly electricity, highly economical.

We are fish shareholders!

Origin "Life" - The fish share.
It couldn't be fresher: in our restaurants, we source our own sustainably farmed char and golden trout from the Reese fish farm in Sarlhusen (Schleswig-Holstein).
Here, the fish swim in the best water quality, as Moorhoop is a spring water location with cool and excellent water quality between minus 4 degrees in winter and 18 degrees in summer. According to producer Gunnar Reese, his fish shareholders appreciate the freshness of the fish, as they are only slaughtered shortly before delivery and transported on ice.

The background to the "fish share" is that customers (including us) have committed to purchasing a quantity of sustainably farmed fish and have become fish shareholders in return. Accordingly, at the beginning of each year we sit down together and calculate how much fish we can offer in our fish counter and also in the Fulgen restaurant, on the basis of which the corresponding fish larvae are then placed.

Outside of this time frame, we source the fish from Transgourmet's sustainable brand: "Ursprung". Transgourmet "Ursprung" brings 100 per cent sustainable farming and species-appropriate animal husbandry to the menu.

As a shareholder of the "fish share", we guarantee the complete traceability of the fish we offer - from pond to plate - both for us as a company and for our guests. We are very proud to be part of this new sustainability project "Fischaktie".

Good luck fishing!

Intelligent heating control in the rooms

The intelligent energy management solution "better.energy" from Betterspace, in combination with smart wireless thermostats, ensures perfect feel-good temperatures throughout the hotel. By using the energy management solution, energy costs and CO² emissions are reduced by up to 31 per cent.

The intelligent control of the radiators in the hotel ensures occupancy-dependent heating and uses smart algorithms to automatically regulate the temperatures in all hotel rooms and bathrooms.

Sauna infusions with organic oils

We only use high-quality organic oils in our sauna infusions. These natural oils not only offer an intense fragrance experience, but are also safe to inhale, particularly gentle on the skin and promote well-being. Enjoy the soothing benefits of organic oils and do something good for your health - in harmony with nature.

Sustainable packaging

We provide our departure water, which we give to our guests at check-out for their journey home, in sustainable Tetra Paks instead of plastic bottles. The Tetra Pak box is made from over 70% wood. The water is sourced from the forests of the Black Forest. A particularly pure quality is achieved with a 2-stage filter process. The Tetra Pak can be disposed of in the yellow bin for optimum recycling. The valuable wood fibres can be recycled up to seven times. With this decision, we are taking a further step towards environmental protection and reducing our plastic consumption.

E-charging station for electric vehicles

Two modern electric car charging stations are available in our underground car park for convenient and environmentally friendly charging of your electric vehicles (you must bring your own cables). This makes it easy to charge your vehicle during your stay. You will be charged for the special parking time for charging after returning the card at reception and is based on your electricity consumption.

and what else?

  • Charging options for your e-bike batteries
  • Food & drinks from regional and seasonal cultivation wherever possible and sensible
  • Treatment plant for tap water
  • Avoid single-use packaging & pre-portioned food
  • Waste reduction, e.g. by not using disposable bath slippers wrapped in plastic
  • Change towels as required
  • Water-saving taps and shower heads
  • Sustainable amenities in the rooms in large dispensers
  • Conversion of public areas to LED lighting and motion detectors
  • Free shuttle service from Kühlungsborn train station to the hotel for your journey by train

And there's more ...

We regularly invest the money saved through the above-mentioned measures in other initiatives that help to preserve this beautiful part of the world and shape an economically and socially sustainable future. Thank you very much for your support!
